SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Each issue of Not Drowning, Waving is created around a particular theme. Check back issues or our website for the list of upcoming themes and submission deadlines.

We prefer not to publish work you’ve already completed previously. What we ask from each artist, instead, is that you choose the theme that most intrigues you of those upcoming and then take a conscious journey into it. (It’s a risk, all right, to do it this way. We understand how much easier it is to just riffle through your files and find something that you think you can tweak a little for a forced fit. But bear with us.)

If the theme is Innocence, for instance, act as if you’ve just arrived on this planet and have no preconceived notions of what this strange concept is. See it, in other words, as if for the first time. Be absolutely obsessed with Innocence: Play with it, examine it from every conceivable angle, see it everywhere you go in the outside world. Let yourself be seduced by Innocence; invite it to invade your dreams, give it a place in all your conversations, sit across from it at breakfast. Where can you feel it in your body? What are your earliest memories of it? Ride the wave of Innocence all the way down into the Here Be Dragons territory and hang out with it there awhile. When you’ve earned its trust and it’s revealed its hidden nature to you in ways you’ve never previously experienced, giving you information you’ve never known before that you recognize on a soul level as being uniquely for you, come back out the other side of this journey and make your art from that perspective, out of these new insights you have to share with the rest of us.

Thanks so much for your interest in submitting your work. We couldn’t do this without you.
